Ballon Boy Parents to Start Paying Up

The parents who pleaded guilty in the balloon boy hoax have agreed to pay about $36,000 in restitution to authorities who responded to the incident.

Larimer County Chief Judge Stephen Schapanski Tuesday accepted the agreement that prosecutors reached with Richard and Mayumi Heene, who weren't at the hearing.

The Larimer County sheriff's office and other agencies had sought $48,000 for responding to the Oct. 15 incident. The Heenes reported their 6-year-old son had floated away in a homemade UFO-shaped helium balloon, touching off a scramble of emergency responders.

The boy wasn't on the balloon.

The Heenes' attorneys had argued the couple should pay only a small amount in compensation.

The cancellation came after they realized what everyone already knew - that the companies were required to do what they did because of accounting rules. Waxman and others had reacted with outrage and accused the companies of doing it - in essence, to make health care reform look bad.

The Democratic memo cancelling the hearing notes, "These one-time charges were required by applicable accounting rules. Under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles as determined by the FASB, companies are required to take a noncash charge against current earnings to recognize a tax liability for the estimated future tax effects of a new law."

The Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee apparently knows less about the health care bill that he helped author than the executives who are now faced with tax penalties built into the legislation.

Waxman's ignorance, coupled with Pelosi's arrogance and Obama's corrupting influence, suggests more surprises are ahead for taxpayers as Obamacare is phased into law.

Gas Tank Blast Kills Teens

Devon Byrd, 16, and Wade White, 18, were killed when a natural gas tank at a well production site exploded last fall in Carnes, in southern Mississippi. Local teenagers said the site is a popular hangout because it's quiet and secluded.

But the dead teens' parents say the explosion could have been prevented if some warning signs had been posted -- "something simple as fences, gates and signs, probably very inexpensive, and certainly a lot less expensive that what a child's life is worth," said White's father, Phillip.

Police say they don't know exactly what ignited flammable vapors inside the tank. When it exploded, the teenagers were killed instantly. Their bodies were found about 40 yards from the tank's base; the tank landed another 20 yards from them. Investigators say they found a lighter, but don't know whether it was involved.

"He may be in compliance," Forrest County Sheriff Billy McGee told CNN. "But there's nothing in the rules for him to be in compliance with."

Under terms of the plea agreement, prosecutors will seek a five-year prison term at Cohen's July 12 sentencing. The 59-year-old also would have to register under Megan's law and has agreed never to seek public office again.

Cohen checked himself into a psychiatric hospital after giving up his Assembly seat in 2008. As an assemblyman, the Democrat championed bills aimed at fighting child pornography.

Cohen left court without commenting.

A Qatari diplomat trying to sneak a smoke in an airplane bathroom sparked a bomb scare Wednesday night on a flight from Washington to Denver, with fighter jets scrambled and law enforcement put on high alert, officials said.
No explosives were found on the man, and officials do not believe he was trying to harm anyone, according to a senior law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Two law enforcement officials said investigators were told the man was asked about the smell of smoke in the bathroom and he made a joke that he had been trying to light his shoes - an apparent reference to the 2001 so-called "shoe bomber" Richard Reid.
The sources asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.
Officials said air marshals aboard the flight restrained the man and he was questioned. The plane landed safely as military jets were scrambled.

High Fructose Corn Syrup Not Good for Humans

It's hard to find a pantry without high fructose corn syrup. It's in cereals, salad dressings, baked goods, fruit juices, crackers and even baby formula.

The sweetener has been linked to obesity and diabetes. Now researchers at Duke Medicine say it may not be good for the liver as well. You may have heard about the study last week on WRAL-TV. Read the story and watch the video by clicking here.

The researchers found only 19 percent of adults with the liver disease reported no intake of fructose-containing beverages, while 52 percent consumed between one and six servings a week and 29 percent consumed fructose-containing beverages on a daily basis.

The study evaluated any beverage with fructose (and 100 percent fruit juices contain fructose). But Abdelmalek told me that more than 90 percent of all the beverages contained high fructose corn syrup.

DURHAM, N.C. -- A Duke University graduate student has discovered what is believed to be the only known printed copy of Haiti's Declaration of Independence.

While researching the early independence of Haiti in February, Julia Gaffield found the document, an eight-page pamphlet dated Jan. 1, 1804, in the British National Archives in London. It is only the second declaration of its kind in the world, the first being the U.S. Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson and others.

Gaffield, who is researching early 19th century Haiti for her doctoral dissertation in history, said the document had been overlooked in the British archives, even as researchers spent decades searching for it in Haiti.

"I wasn't specifically looking for it, but I had an eye out for it because I knew it was missing," Gaffield said. "We figured there was an original somewhere, but didn't know if it still existed."

The Nicholas, which sunk a suspected pirate skiff Thursday after taking fire, is part of the U.S. military's Africa Command.

The USS Nicholas reported taking fire from a suspected pirate skiff shortly after midnight local time west of the Seychelles, the statement said. The Nicholas quickly returned fire and began pursuing the skiff, which was eventually disabled. A boarding team from the Nicholas subsequently captured and detained three people, the statement said.

Two more suspected pirates were captured on a confiscated "mother ship," the statement said. The detainees will "remain in U.S. custody on board Nicholas until a determination is made regarding their disposition," it said.

The Pentagon is determining its next steps, and the suspects may be sent to Kenya to be tried in a piracy court there, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said Thursday

The Nicholas, based in Norfolk, Virginia, is part of the U.S. military's Africa Command.

GRAHAM, N.C. -- A former executive for a private North Carolina laboratory that provided DNA testing in the Duke lacrosse rape case has lost a lawsuit challenging his firing.

The Times-News of Burlington reported that Superior Court Judge J.B. Allen Jr. on Friday dismissed the lawsuit by former DNA Security Inc. director Brian Meehan. The Burlington company said it terminated Meehan in 2007 for "just cause."

The lab's initial report omitted the fact that evidence collected from the accuser matched none of the Duke lacrosse players who underwent DNA testing.

Meehan later testified the lab's report was tailored to suit former Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong.

The three athletes were exonerated. Nifong was stripped of his law license.

Patti Muldowney was busy snapping pictures of colorful fish during her snorkeling dive off the coast of Aruba last fall. She didn't notice what else was on the sea floor.
"We only discovered it after we got the film developed," the 62-year-old Rapho Township woman said.
Flipping through the prints in December, the Muldowneys realized Patti had photographed more than just underwater scenery.
One picture appears to show a human skeleton.
"You can see a fish. You can see some rocks. And then you can see this body lying on its back, facing up," said her husband, John Muldowney.
They showed friends. They showed the local police.
All agreed: It looks like human bones.
"I showed my doctor," John Muldowney said. "He said it looks like it's weighted down with some rocks."

Federal prosecutors Wednesday filed criminal charges against a Santa Monica sushi restaurant and one of its chefs, alleging that they sold endangered whale meat.

Named in the complaint, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, were Typhoon Restaurant Inc., owner of the Hump restaurant at Santa Monica Airport, and chef Kiyoshiro Yamamoto, 45, of Culver City. Both were charged with the illegal sale of a marine mammal product, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a maximum fine of $100,000 for an individual and $200,000 for an organization.

“Someone should not be able to walk into a restaurant and order a plate of an endangered species,” said U.S. Atty. André Birotte Jr. in a prepared statement.

The Hump restaurant, a hip sushi hangout, came under fire after allegations surfaced in Tuesday’s New York Times that it had served endangered Sei whale meat, possibly straight from the trunk of a white Mercedes.

Judge Lenient on Young

Superior Court Judge Abraham Penn Jones said he was tempted to send Andrew Young to jail for up to 75 days for contempt of court – he even momentarily ordered Young to jail before backing off – unless he surrendered all copies of the sex tape. He said he wouldn't jail Young's wife.

"It troubles me," Jones said. "I tried to be patient – patient and firm – but I don't want to be a fool."

Rielle Hunter, a campaign staffer who had an affair and a child with Edwards, sued the Youngs on Jan. 28, saying they had taken a video she described as "very private and personal," as well as campaign videos she shot and pictures of her daughter.

She alleged that the Youngs wanted the items to generate publicity for his book, "The Politician," which chronicles Edwards' rise and fall and provides details of his affair with Hunter.

A federal grand jury in Raleigh is investigating whether campaign funds were illegally used to cover up Edwards' affair.

Children's advocates in North Carolina who lost a political tussle over corporal punishment in the public schools last year are trying again this year by focusing on a spanking ban for children with disabilities.
Action for Children North Carolina released on Wednesday a report showing corporal punishment was used more than 1,400 times in 26 school districts that still use it during the last school year.
The group asked state legislators to pass a broad ban for children with physical, mental or similar challenges. They said there are better ways to deal with disruptive behavior.
Districts have the option to use corporal punishment. In 2009, the state Senate rejected a bill that would have allowed adults to opt out their children in the districts that still use it.

NC High School Diploma Values Plummet

Just because you did not meet minimum state competancy levels when you graduated, and now they do not require those competancies, you can now apply for a high school diploma? Why?

Former students who earned certificates from Harnett County Schools (HCS) can now receive a diploma due to a change in state law. Students who met all state and local graduation requirements except for passing the Computer Skills Test or Competency Test in Reading and Math can petition the district for a diploma.

In accordance with state legislation, the tests were eliminated and are no longer required for graduation. Current students who have not passed the tests will be eligible to receive a diploma if they meet all other requirements.

*The Computer Skills requirement started with the graduating class of 2001.
*The Reading and Math competency requirement started with the graduating class of 1982.
*Petitions for diplomas will be accepted during a five year window through July 1, 2014.

Previous Harnett County School 's graduates who received a certificate between the years of 1981 - 2009 should contact their former high school to petition for a diploma.

But t wo Democratic sources tell NBC News that Rangel will take a "leave of absence" — beginning Wednesday — until the investigation is over.

The powerful Democrat was encouraged to step aside before the House votes on a bill to strip him of his chairmanship.

"We don't have the votes to save him," one Democratic member said of Rangel.

In a report released Friday, the House ethics committee said that aides to the 20-term New York Democrat tried at least three times to show him the trips — to Antigua in 2007 and St. Maarten in 2008 — had corporate sponsorship, a violation of congressional gift rules.

The California lawyer, dentist, and real estate agent "has applied for urgent action under the mandate for human rights defenders," according to a letter from her attorney, reports the Washington Independent.

Taitz has "been the victim of death threats, vandalism, false complaints, and a suspected assassination attempt" in the course of her efforts to expose Obama as a Kenyan fraud, the letter states, adding that "her reports to law enforcement and the judiciary have been ignored." There has not yet been any official response from the UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights.

WASHINGTON -- A Transportation Department official says the department plans to open a formal investigation into the 2009-2010 Toyota Corolla over potential problems with the car's power steering.

The preliminary investigation is expected to be opened on Thursday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the department had not yet notified Toyota of the probe.

Toyota Motor Corp. said earlier Wednesday it was looking into complaints of power steering problems with the Corolla and was considering a recall. Toyota said there have been fewer than 100 complaints.

Drivers have complained they feel they were losing control over the steering, particularly at highway speeds. Toyota sold nearly 300,000 Corollas in the United States last year.

The U.S. Agency for International Development has awarded another lucrative no-bid contract, Fox News has learned -- this time to a "politically connected" lobbyist and high-profile friend of former President Bill Clinton.

This marks the second no-bid contract the agency has been found to have awarded since the start of the year, despite a long history of vows by President Obama to crack down on the practice. The first, awarded on Jan. 4 and worth nearly $25 million, was steered to a firm owned by a donor to the Obama presidential campaign, for legal work in Afghanistan. The cancellation of that contract was announced by the State Department shortly after Fox News reported its existence on Jan. 25.

USAID's latest no-bid contract, worth close to $100,000, was awarded on Jan. 18 to the GlobalOptions Group for work in earthquake-stricken Haiti, where Clinton is the U.N. special envoy and is helping to lead private fundraising efforts.

Raleigh, N.C. — Former Gov. Mike Easley sometimes used a secret e-mail account to conduct state business, according to a longtime staffer who testified as part of a public records lawsuit.

By law, e-mails about public business are supposed to be public record. Several media outlets sued in 2008 over access to e-mails to and from Easley's office after some state workers claimed that staffers were told to routinely delete sensitive e-mail.

In her deposition in the lawsuit, Sherri Johnson, who served as Easley's communications director, told media attorneys that the former governor used a private e-mail account to conduct some state business and that only a few top staffers could access it.

The Carolina Journal supplied WRAL News with a copy of Johnson's deposition. The newspaper, which is one of the media outlets participating in the suit, is part of the conservative John Locke Foundation.

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, a Republican, was arguing for fundamental changes to welfare to break the "cycle of dependency" at a town hall meeting in Fountain Inn, S.C., on Friday, when he said:

"My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed. You're facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. ...

"They will reproduce," Bauer said, "especially ones that don't think too much further than that. And so what you've got to do is you've got to curtail that type of behavior. They don't know any better."

Bauman should have known better. His "gross misconduct" was that he "followed the man to get his license number". Walmart associates are not allowed to step outside of the store beyond the concrete and onto the asphalt of the parking lot. Too many associates got hurt before the change in policy following shoplifters onto the parking lot as he did. This is why the policy is not as it is now. I don't get it why many are against him being fired for not following the policy designed to protect associates such as himself.

Bauman went into Walmart hoping to get back to work for the first time since police said he was punched by a customer. Instead, Bauman said he was fired. His termination notice called the incident an act of "gross misconduct" and accused Bauman of fighting with a customer.
"They told me I did a good job of defending myself," said Bauman. "Then they turned around and fired me. I guess they just wanted me to stand there and get beaten."

On Dec. 26, a customer in red shorts set off an alarm while leaving the store. Bauman followed the man to get his license number. The man got angry and took Bauman's clipboard. Bauman said he tried to get it back and leaned into the customer who took a swing. Bauman said he swung back in order to defend himself.

The group, Islam4UK, will be banned starting Thursday after its British leader, Anjem Choudary, threatened to bring hundreds of people marching in protest through the streets a small market town known for honoring the British soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

The latest ban puts the group in the same league with terror organizations such as Al Qaeda, and the Tamil Tigers. It could lead to the arrest of anyone meeting under the Islam4UK name or using the group's insignia.

Al-Muhajiroun, which means "The Emigrants" in Arabic, catapulted to notoriety shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, when it organized an event celebrating the airline hijackers who slaughtered thousands in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

At least eight women in Fayetteville, Hope Mills and on Fort Bragg have reported being sexually assaulted or raped in their homes since mid-November, under similar circumstances.

Law enforcement believe the cases could be related.

In each case, a woman was home alone in an apartment or similar type of housing, authorities say. Each assault was between 10 p.m. and 7:30 a.m., and vague descriptions of the attacker from law enforcement include similar characteristics.

Seven of the attacks were in Fayetteville's city limits, according to a Police Department spokesman. At least one attack has been reported in military family housing on Fort Bragg, according to a flier distributed by the Army's Criminal Investigation Command, though it was unclear whether that attack was among the seven in the city.

But few other details about the attacks were released Monday.

An elderly Massachusetts couple who were being sought by police for allegedly skipping out on several thousands of dollars in hotel bills have turned themselves in, MyFoxBoston.com reported.

Benjamin Wolff, 79, and Jane Wolff, 72, turned themselves into police in Concord, Mass., and were arraigned on Friday. The husband and wife were released on personal recognizance,MyFoxBoston reported.

In August, the Wolffs stayed at the Hawthorne Inn in Concord for 19 days while they reportedly said they were in between moving houses.

The inn's owners, Gregory Burch and Marilyn Mudry, said the Wolff's check bounced and their credit card didn't work when it came time to pay their $3,600 bill. They called police but said the elderly couple had already left, according to MyFoxBoston.

“The last thing Ben said was, ‘Well, I'm good for it. I'm getting $20 million either today or tomorrow',” Mudry said, according to MyFoxBoston.

The intelligence reports that have circulated in the past week have caused several Western institutions to quietly shut their offices in Aden and prompted families with children based there to leave, the sources said. There are believed to be only a few hundred Westerners still living in Aden. Yemeni police and security authorities are said to have erected roadblocks to check on travelers.

News of a terrorist threat in Aden, previously regarded as the more stable part of the country, came as American and British officials reopened their embassies in Sana’a, the Yemeni capital. Both countries recently shut their embassies for two days, citing terrorist threats by Al Qaeda.

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) A scam artist opened fire on police in busy Times Square on Thursday afternoon and was shot and killed by an officer near the famed Marriott Marquis hotel, police said.

No one else was injured. The 25-year-old suspect was recognized by a plainclothes sergeant on a task force that monitors aggressive panhandling, and took off running through the hotel's passenger drop-off area, chief New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said.

At some point, the man turned and opened fire on the officer, continued running, then turned and fired again, Browne said. The plainclothes officer returned fire, killing the suspect, Browne said.

Dave Kinmahan, a tourist from Boston, was parking his car in a spot below street level at the hotel when he saw one man shooting another.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Blessed with a Friday off school, 15-year-old Alyssa Bustamante dug two holes in the ground to be used as a grave, authorities said. For the next week, she attended classes, all the while plotting the right time for a murder, they said.

"Ultimately, she stated she wanted to know what it felt like," Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. David Rice testified Wednesday during a court hearing over the slaying.

Bustamante was ordered held without bond pending her trial. If convicted of first-degree murder, she would be sentenced to life in prison without parole.

After her arrest, Bustamante tried to cut herself with her own fingernails while being held in juvenile custody, said her appointed juvenile defense attorney Kurt Valentine.

Cole County Sheriff Greg White said later that Bustamante would be held at a different, undisclosed location.

Police say they have found a body in a wooded area off of Walker Road and Highway 87. Officials say they presume the body to be that of missing 5-year-old Shaniya Davis, but are still waiting for a positive identification.

Fayetteville Police spokeswoman Theresa Chance said they are still waiting for SBI officials to arrive on scene to exhume the body and provide a positive identification.

About 200 volunteers and law enforcement gathered Monday morning to search that area after receiving a tip that her body may have been dumped there. About six miles from the hotel where Shaniya was last seen alive and 100 feet off Walker Road is where searchers found her body.

"You have a lot of people in shock right now. You always hold out hope that you're going to be able to reunite, especially a child with their family," said Fayetteville Police spokeswoman Theresa Chance.

Shortly before 2 p.m. on November 16, officials cancelled the Amber Alert issued for Davis.

Fayetteville police arrested Clarence Darriel Coe, 30, of 211 Brookwood Ave. in Fayetteville, at about 11 p.m. Wednesday and charged him with first-degree kidnapping in the disappearance of Shaniya Nicole Davis.

The girl is still missing, and police planned a press conference Thursday at 9 p.m. to discuss updates in the case.

"She's in danger. She was abducted. We're taking this of the utmost importance and seriousness, so we're aggressively looking for her," said Theresa Chance, spokeswoman for the Fayetteville Police Department.

The plane's departure to Chicago was "imminent", with 124 passengers and 11 crew members on board, when the arrest took place, a Heathrow spokesman said.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "At 12.30pm on 9 November we attended a flight at Heathrow Airport and arrested a 51-year-old man.

Police are awaiting the outcome of further tests on the man.

A civilian officer who was wounded in the incident shot the suspect, who is "in custody and in stable condition," Cone told reporters.

The suspect, who officials initially said was killed in the incident, was identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, a law enforcement source told CNN.

A graduate of Virginia Tech, Hasan is a psychiatrist who is licensed in Virginia and was practicing at Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, according to professional records. Previously, he worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

A federal official said Hasan is a U.S. citizen of Jordanian descent. Military documents show that Hasan was born in Virginia, and was never deployed outside the United States.

Hasan was scheduled to be deployed to Iraq "and appeared to be upset about that," Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said.

At least 10 of the dead were soldiers, Cone said.

The shooter had two weapons, both handguns, Cone said.

Earthquakes Aftershocks?

The small earthquakes that sporadically rattle the central United States may actually be aftershocks from a few extremely large quakes that occurred in the region almost 200 years ago, according to a new study.

The New Madrid Earthquakes, which struck between December 1811 and February 1812, are some of the strongest seismic events ever to occur in the contiguous United States in recorded history. The largest quake is estimated to have been 8.0 in magnitude and was powerful enough to temporarily make the Mississippi River flow backwards. The heart of the seismic activity was near the town of New Madrid, Mo., close to the Kentucky and Tennessee borders.

The town has shaken with numerous earthquakes since, from tiny ones that don't cause much of a stir, to moderate sized ones, such as a 5.2 quake in 2008.

Wal-Mart and two other top retailers said Friday they are suspending business with a large southwestern Michigan blueberry grower after investigators found children as young as 6 working in the grower's fields.Wal-Mart, Kroger and Meijer said pending further information, they have stopped buying products from Adkin Blue Ribbon Blueberry Co. near South Haven, about 85 miles northeast of Chicago.Adkin general manager Tony Marr said the company has a strictly enforced written policy prohibiting young children from working in its fields. All adult employees must sign copies of the policy, and the farm keeps the signed copies on file, he said."We certainly don't condone or promote child labor here in any way," Marr said.The company has eight full-time employees and hires about 350 seasonal workers each year to harvest and process the blueberries grown on its 640 acres. Clay County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Mary Justino says authorities have confirmed that the body of a small girl found in a Georgia landfill is Somer.
Justino did not say how the girl was killed, adding authorities have not located a suspect.
The little girl was found partially covered in a Georgia landfill near the Florida state line, after investigators followed garbage trucks leaving the neighborhood where Somer disappeared.

Gov. Beverly Perdue said late Thursday that she has no plans to release 20 prison inmates next week following a recent state Supreme Court ruling that they had served out their life sentences and should be freed."While I understand the decision of the Supreme Court, I believe there remain unresolved legal issues that were not addressed," Perdue said in a statement. "Until these new legal issues have been resolved by the courts ... (the) violent offenders will not be released."
The Supreme Court ruled two weeks ago that a state law from 1970s defined a life sentence as 80 years and that, when good-behavior credits were included, some inmates had completed their sentence. The law was changed a few years later.
Under the ruling, the inmates are set to be released next Thursday.
North Carolina prison officials have spent recent days double-checking the good behavior credits to determine whether the 20 felons are even eligible for such credits.
Chrissy Pearson, a spokeswoman for Perdue, said Thursday that the Department of Correction is verifying that the credits were "lawfully and correctly applied." Officials are "exploring every angle," she said.

For once, I agree with Gov. Beverly Perdue. The state needs to investigatge that at every angle. As far as I am concerned, life is life.

Stewart David Nozette, 52, of Chevy Chase, was charged in a criminal complaint with attempting to communicate, deliver and transmit classified information, the Justice Department said. The complaint does not allege that the government of Israel or anyone acting on its behalf violated U.S. law.
In Jerusalem, where the story broke late at night, Israeli government officials had no immediate comment.

The Heenes have reportedly been working on a reality TV deal in Los Angeles.
Investigators are examining the possibility of other conspirators, "including the possibility that even some of the media outlets may have had some knowledge about this," Alderden said.

Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and state Department of Insurance investigated the scheme, which involved at least seven staged accidents and netted $131,000 for the conspirators.
Barbara Mercedes Thompson, 29, and Derrick Devon Thompson, 30 – both of 361 Pinwheel Circle in Lumberton – and Dormaine K. Baker, 34, of 970 Benson Chapel Road in Rowland, were arrested Thursday.
All were charged with insurance fraud, obtaining property by false pretenses and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretenses. They were being held in the Robeson County jail Thursday under separate $10,000 unsecured bonds.
Investigators said that the Thompsons and Baker staged a wreck in July 2006 then submitted false medical bills to insurer AIG, Inc. AIG paid out approximately $21,000 to the three, investigators said.

A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have. Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

Bardwell said he asks everyone who calls about marriage if they are a mixed race couple. If they are, he does not marry them, he said.

Easley Committee to be Scrutinized in Public Hearing

Former Gov. Mike Easley's campaign records will be scrutinized in a public hearing to determine whether Easley's campaign committee violated the law, the State Board of Elections announced Wednesday.

Board director Gary Bartlett said the elections board would meet Oct. 26 to examine evidence about The Mike Easley Committee as well as the state Democratic Party.

Board staff has been investigating Easley campaign records since the campaign changed reports after failing to disclose the use of a car. The board also is examining if free airplane flights for Easley exceeded donation limits.

The Democratic Party in July forfeited more than $24,000 in contributions that had been reported earlier this decade because of questions surrounding them. Nearly all of the donors have been identified as having flown Mike Easley around on private aircraft when he was governor.

An FBI forensics lab identified a blood stain outline of a child in the fetal position in the trunk liner of accused child killer Casey Anthony’s truck, according to newly released documents.
The new information came in an e-mail from FBI Intelligence Analyst Karen B. Cowan to another agency employee in an email dated Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008.
The 23-year-old Orlando woman is charged with killing her 2-year-old daughter Caylee, hiding the child's remains and lying to investigators about a baby sitter kidnapping her.
“If you look closely at this photo, there appears to be the outline or silhouette of a child in the fetal position," Cowan wrote.
The e-mail was included among thousands more pages of information pertaining to the Anthony case that were released by the Florida state attorney's office on Tuesday.

It seems like someone is going to jail for killing her child.

The 37-year-old father, a divorced ironsmith, was in stable condition after doctors reattached his severed hands, the offcial said.

"Two brothers, a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old, are dead after their car slammed into the side of a school bus in north Phoenix on Wednesday morning.

A huge crowd gathered Wednesday night at the accident scene to mourn the deaths of Elmin and Eldin Morina. Their elder brother Elvis Morina said, "They were the best brothers in the world. I had a lot of respect for them, and they respected me. They were the best."

Choking back tears, he said, "I appreciate the support, and I know my brothers are looking down and they appreciate it too... they'd be very happy they were loved this much."

Classmates are devastated, and Elvis Morina had this advice. "Let your families know that you love them everyday. I barely talked to them yesterday and I regret that so much... I love my brothers and I hope they can hear me.""

Later in the story, it is stated that the accident was at 720am. In the posting about the accident before this post, the video reporter stated that the driver was going an estimated 90 mph, and another student stated theat they were running late to class that morning. It will be interesting to see how the accident investigation goes, and whom is to blam, or to see what the driver of the car was doing, in additon to driving, if anything at all. And what about the bus driver? He or she is 70.

But when Douglas Perlitz, 39, appeared Friday in federal court in Denver, he agreed to be returned to Connecticut to face a 10-count indictment alleging he used his position in the university-supported Project Pierre Toussaint program to provide shelter, food, money and other gifts to homeless street boys in exchange for sex.

It's a case that has shocked the Jesuit school located in suburban Connecticut, as questions also arise about the whereabouts of the Rev. Paul Carrier, the university's former director of campus ministry and community service, who also served as chairman of the board controlling the school's Haiti Fund. That fund provided much of the money to Project Pierre Toussaint.

Hofstra University freshman Danmell Ndonye could face criminal charges after lying to police about being tied up and gang raped in a dormitory bathroom during a fraternity party.

Ndonye's allegations led to the arrest of four men whose names and pictures were widely circulated following her accusations.

Investigators said that a video of the sexual encounter shows Ndonye consenting to the sex romp. Ndonye later recanted her allegations of rape, confessing to police that she had made up the charges because she had been afraid to tell her boyfriend about the illicit bathroom encounter.

So instead of being quiet to her boyfriend about cheating on him, she decides to cry rape? Wow! At least Nassau County, where Hofstra University is located, will at least consider charges, unlike the state of North Carolina that will not prosecute someone for stating some students at Duke university raped her at a frat house, and embarrassing the city of Durham, NC and the entire state as well.

Anthony's criminal record, according to Wake County Jail oicials, includes failure to appear, trafficking heroin, failure to stop at a stop-sign/flashing red lights, conspiracy to traffic heroin, speeding to elude arrest, assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and damage to personal property.

Child Porn Found in Special Commitment Center

More residents of Washington's Special Commitment Center for sex offenders have been indicted on federal charges of child pornography.

The seven indictments were unsealed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Seattle. The documents don't specify how the men supposedly obtained the child porn.

It's been an ongoing mystery at the center on McNeil Island, which blocks residents from the Internet. At least four other sex offenders have faced child porn charges before, and officials have said they don't know about the source.

Several of the charges date to 2007, but some are more recent. The men were all committed involuntarily for treatment after they served their prison terms.

If convicted, they could be sent back to prison.

U.N. Budget Proposal 1,702 Pages; And Only $13.9B

As the United Nations General Assembly reconvenes in New York City this week, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon intends to present its members with a two-year headquarters budget that he claims will be as stingy as these recessionary times demand. It will total just $4.9 billion, a trifling 0.5 percent — or $22.4 million — more than the U.N. spent over the previously two years. The U.S. pays 22 percent of the new budget total, or about $1.08 billion.

“This level of resources,” Ban proclaims in his introduction to the 1,702-page budget document, “is the outcome of the lengthy budget formulation process, reflecting a thorough review and extensive consultations with program managers to ensure the optimal utilization of resources in order to fully, efficiently and effectively implement the objectives and mandates set by Member States.”

Ban’s claim, however, is deeply misleading. In fact, the same budget document shows that Ban is on track to maintain and surpass his previous record as the biggest spender in U.N. history.

Where do I even begin! $13.9B over two years for the building is efficient? Ban ki Moon is the biggest spender in UN history—and has no reason claiming efficiency.

"Authorities in New York say the Hofstra University student who told police that she had been gang-raped by five men on campus has recanted her story.
Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said in a statement released late Wednesday that the 18-year-old told law enforcement officials that the sex was consensual.
Rice says Nassau County Judge Robert Bruno then dismissed the charges against four of the men and ordered their release."

The judge let the falsely charged guys go--good! Has the woman, who is not named here for some reason, been charged with bringing false charges? I hope these four guys are talking to some lawyers.
